Dear modeling groups,
Already a long time ago we thought that the data avalanche was about to start. Very little has happened yet. Therefore, in order to time e.g. hardware purchase, I would appreciate if modeling groups would let me know how many bytes of data, and which experiments, are planned in 2012, preferably with an expected date.
Thanks!! Ole (

We have received European 50km data from the Meteorological and Hydrological Service of Croatia (DHMZ). I have added menu buttons on your left to access both existing datasets in the oldfashioned ways.
NOTE that, contrary to some rumours, WE ARE OPEN TO RECEIVE DATA. At the moment we have limited space, as we are using the old ENSEMBLES server while implementing the new ESGF software on the new machine. But, first come, first served. I will put data up, and move older and less used ENSEMBLES data out of the way, as you give data to me.
In the end we should have a version of the ESGF software running. This is the system employed in CMIP5, meaning that data is distributed across a (large) number of datanodes, e.g. at the institutes doing the simulations. However, we are committed at the DMI to help out smaller institutions who do not want to implement ESG datanodes, and also to enable some redundancy by storing as much data as we can get hold of, at least the standard 50km simulations. |

A late modification in the attributes of sunshine duration has been done in the specifications (it is a sum, not an average). I don't think it will really affect you. |

Dear all,
The SMHI has made me aware of the fact that CMIP5 requires a dash "-" and not an underscore "_" between StartTime and EndTime. Sorry about that! The specs will be mended in a few minutes. This should only be related to file names, not to the content of files.
A further issue is the direction of winds. Please let me stress that Table 1 parameters 29 and 30 "Zonal Wind" and "Meridional Wind" are to be understood RELATIVE TO REAL POLES and not the rotated poles of a simulation. In other words, even if the data are located on the native, rotated grid, they must be rotated wrt. the real North Pole. This means that you will all probably have to do a vector rotation, since most RCMs output wind directions relative to the native grid orientation!
Finally I have added a bit about the cell_methods attribute, which is a bit complex when averaging daily maxima and the like.
Happy simulating, Ole |

Dear all,
This must be like the phony war in 1939... So many groups have let me know that their data are almost ready, but many different problems have come up, and I honestly do not have any actual data yet. Just in case you are starting to doubt this: YES, we are open. We will accept data either over the net, or on disk, as described in the specification document. We do not have the final interface up yet, and you will probably have to wait for a while for that. But, it should be possible to give access to the data with a temporary ENSEMBLES-like interface.
Update 9/11/11: We have received ERAINTERIM African data from the University of Castilla La Mancha (UCLM). Since we are currently implementing and testing on the machine supposed to be the CORDEX data server in the future, I have put the data up on the ENSEMBLES RT3 server to make it accessible in the mean time. Note that the UCLM had problems with netcdf4, so the files are gzipped netcdf3, just like ENSEMBLES. I have not made any consistency check of these data, since that piece of software has not been developed yet. I will, however, appreciate being told if you find any errors or inconsistencies!! Download the data directly from this link or via OpenDAP from this link. |
